Our Director of Teacher Training has published a new article ‘Assessment and Motivation in English Language Programmes’ in the most recent copy of Modern English Teacher.
In the article, Craig looks at the relationship between assessment and students’ motivation.
Drawing on studies from primary and secondary general education, the article outlines some of the ways that assessment can have a negative effect on learners’ motivation while, at other times, it can be used as part of the motivational toolkit. It emphasises the relationship between assessment and learning and outlines how Learning Oriented Assessment can provide motivational opportunities for learners. Finally, it examines the kind of feedback that is likely to benefit students and looks at practical examples of how this feedback can be structured.
